Job Description

Tiivistelmä työpaikkailmoituksesta: Tampere University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Industrial Energy Processes and Sustainable Biorefining at Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor level. The role involves leading high-level experimental and modelling research on biorefining, valorisation of industrial energy and waste streams, CO2 and industrial gas refinement, and integration of decarbonisation processes with access to TAU’s Noodi research centre. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in energy, process or chemical engineering (or related), have strong industrial-process knowledge and collaboration skills, be fluent in English, and meet level-specific research, teaching and funding track-record requirements. Salaries follow the Finnish University Salary System with typical starting ranges of approximately €4800–5300/month for Assistant Professor, €5500–6200/month for Associate Professor and €6600–7200/month for Professor, and applications close on 4 January 2027 at 23:59 EET. Tämä tiivistelmä on luotu tekoälyn avulla. Together, Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences form a higher education community that places faith in people and scientific knowledge. Leading experts in the fields of technology, health and society are changing the world at Finland’s second largest multidisciplinary higher education institution. www.tuni.fi/en The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University (TAU) is inviting applications for a tenure-track position in Industrial Energy Processes and Sustainable Biorefining. The world needs pioneers in its search for operating models for sustainable economy and well-being, while avoiding the over-consumption of natural resources. The ongoing green transition is crucial to develop a sustainable, low fossil carbon and resource-efficient future. Such a transition requires the development of new solutions for protecting our environment for sustainable use and recovery of natural resources that are sustainable and economically feasible. The Bio and Circular Economy subunit (BIC) is part of the Materials Science and Environmental Engineering unit (MSEE) , one of the three units of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS) at TAU. Our work focuses on environmental and energy technologies, bioenergy and biorefining, along with industrial biotechnology, with the ultimate goal of promoting a cleaner and safer future for the benefit of people and the environment. We develop processes and concepts for energy production and sustainable conversion of municipal and industrial waste, wastewater, and flue gas to valuable biochemicals and clean biofuels through experimental and modelling work. Furthermore, we focus on energy-efficient recovery of water, nutrients and metals. Our research ranges from laboratory scale to system level and we work on the integration of the processes into urban environments and industry. The group has active collaboration with utilities, industry as well as several national and international research organizations. Job description We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished candidates in the area of Industrial Energy Processes and Sustainable Biorefining for conducting high-level scientific research to promote circular economy and green transition. We offer an opportunity to build an internationally visible research group that advances energy engineering and industrial decarbonisation at the intersection of biorefining, circular economy and sustainable resource recovery. You will join a multidisciplinary environment with new experimental facilities, strong industrial partnerships and a negotiable start-up package tailored to your research ambitions. Your research could, for example, focus on: valorisation of industrial energy and waste streams or biobased feedstocks; or developing solutions for refinement of carbon dioxide and industrial gases, including carbon capture and utilisation; or integration of decarbonisation processes, for example, with waste heat utilization, advanced biorefining, and waste material valorisation. The position emphasises process-level and system-level solutions that connect energy conversion with material circulation, environmental engineering and industrial sustainability. We are especially interested in candidates who are doing experimental research on the refinement of carbon dioxide -rich streams or organic waste and side streams to support industrial decarbonization. Additional expertise in computational or process modelling is highly appreciated. The successful candidate should be able to integrate their fundamental research with other researchers at various units and faculties of TAU as well as collaborate with national and international universities and research institutes, and to build strong local and national industrial collaborations. The position is intended to strengthen the Bio and Circular Economy subunits’ distinctive profile in conve
