Take ownership of our data engineering function and shape how we process, store, and utilize critical infrastructure data. Safegrid's Intelligent Grid System consists of two main components: field-deployed IoT sensor devices and a cloud platform. This role focuses on ingesting, modeling, and transforming large volumes of field and sensor data to support machine learning models and advanced analytics. We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer to strengthen our capability in robust data pipelines, scalable storage solutions, and production reliability. This is a senior-level role with substantial technical ownership. Working with backend developers, data scientists, and systems engineers across Finland and the US, you will strengthen our dedicated data engineering capability and progressively take ownership of a new platform architecture while integrating and managing legacy components. What you will do Design and build reliable, scalable data pipelines to process large volumes of IoT and electrical-grid sensor data. Develop data models and storage solutions that shift our capabilities from purely real-time visualization to predictive analytics. Integrate new platform architectures with legacy components, ensuring smooth data flow and system reliability in a transitional environment. Collaborate closely with data scientists to embed machine learning models directly into production data pipelines. Own the end-to-end data engineering function, making and defending architectural choices while establishing technical practices in a pragmatic, startup-like environment. What we are looking for Strong engineering fundamentals in data pipeline architecture, distributed systems, and data modeling. Substantial hands-on experience in building and operating production-grade data pipelines using Java. Strong practical skills in modern data processing frameworks and storage solutions (such as PostgreSQL, Delta Lake, Flink, and Spark). Experience taking ownership of complex data platforms, ideally including experience as a founding data engineer or working in an environment with high autonomy and ambiguity. A systematic, evidence-based approach to troubleshooting data flow, integrations, and production incidents. Clear communication skills, professional proficiency in English, and the ability to challenge assumptions constructively to align cross-functional teams on technical decisions. A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field, with senior-level experience, or equivalent practical background. Useful experience Experience with Python, Databricks, PySpark, and Kubernetes. Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (we use Azure, but experience with any major cloud provider is welcome). Knowledge of stream processing (Kafka), MQTT-based IoT data ingestion, or working with time-series data related to electrical grids or critical infrastructure. We do not expect candidates to already know all of these areas. Strong fundamentals, technical curiosity, and the enthusiasm to learn unfamiliar domains are more important than experience with particular tools or technologies. Location and working model The role is based in Turku, Finland and combines a flexible hybrid working model with at least two days per week at the Turku office. Collaboration with colleagues in the US requires occasional flexibility across time zones.
