They will propose and develop novel deep learning methodologies, publish high‑quality papers, integrate methods and baselines into the project's toolbox, and be responsible for related project deliverables and meetings. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree and demonstrate strong machine learning and deep learning expertise, proficiency in Python and libraries (PyTorch or TensorFlow), independent research ability, and very good English and teamwork skills. The position is funded by the Horizon Europe project OPERA (Open Perception, Learning, and Decision-Making Toolbox for General Purpose Robot AI), and the selected applicant will be a member of the Signal Analysis and Machine Intelligence group led by Professor Moncef Gabbouj , and closely collaborate with the Machine Intelligence group led by Professor Alexandros Iosifidis , on achieving the goals and objectives of Tampere University team within the project. The position is full-time starting from November 1st, 2026, until the end of the project September 30th, 2030. In case a selected applicant starts later than the start of the project, the duration of the position will be adjusted to end at the end of the project. The position is placed in the Unit of Computing Sciences within Tampere University's Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences . The workplace is located at Hervanta Campus of Tampere University, Finland. JOB DESCRIPTION The postdoctoral researcher fellow at Tampere University will propose and develop novel deep learning methodologies, disseminate their results in high-quality publications in international conferences and journals, interact with project partners in project activities, integrate their methodologies and related baselines to the toolbox of the project. The selected postdoctoral researcher fellow will also be responsible for the project deliverables related to the tasks below, arranging and attending period meetings with the researchers in the team and in the consortium, publishing high-quality papers in relevant conferences and journals. The research topics for the selected applicant are the following: Efficient human-centric active perception and learning Social signal analysis and collaborative learning Learning for increased robustness to variations and adaptation Active sensor fusion for increased robustness and adaptivity In addition, the duties of the postdoctoral researcher fellow may include some teaching tasks (5-10 %) in topics connected to their expertise. REQUIREMENTS A completed doctoral degree in computer science, computer engineering, or another related field Proven expertise in Machine Learning theory and methods, and related Deep Learning approaches Excellent knowledge of programming in Python and scientific libraries used for Deep Learning (PyTorch or TensorFlow). Ability to work using multiple Deep Learning libraries Ability to pursue independent scholarly activity and lead systematic scientific research related to the design of Deep Learning methods and models A curious mind and solid skills in critical thinking and problem solving Very good communication skills in English, and ability to lead and collaborate in multidisciplinary teams Ability to write research papers in high-quality peer-reviewed journals or conferences in the field of Machine Learning and Computer Vision WE OFFER The full-time position will be filled for a fixed-term period starting from November 1st, 2026 until the end of the project September 30th, 2030 . The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System . According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a postdoctoral researcher fellow is placed on level 5 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for a postdoctoral researcher fellow is 4000-4200 EUR/month. The salary increases based on performance.
