Firmware Engineer – Embedded Systems
Location: Porvoo, Finland | Hybrid
About the Role
SPX AtoN is looking for an experienced Firmware Engineer to join our engineering team in Porvoo and play a key role in the development of our next generation of embedded products.
This is a highly hands-on engineering role, with 100% hands-on involvement in coding, testing and debugging. You’ll work at low level, developing firmware directly on microcontrollers and collaborating closely with hardware, systems and other engineering teams.
Our existing products use Renesas platforms, while our new product development is moving towards ARM Cortex, making ARM experience particularly valuable.
What You’ll Do
Develop embedded firmware from initial design through to testing, release and maintenance.
Write low-level C firmware, working with both bare-metal and RTOS environments.
Develop, test, debug and maintain firmware for microcontroller-based products.
Work on both New Product Introduction (NPI) and sustaining engineering activities.
Investigate and resolve software defects and identify opportunities to improve existing products.
Create software designs, technical specifications, test plans and development documentation.
Work closely with hardware, systems, test and project engineers to deliver complete products.
Investigate new technologies and contribute to the development of next-generation products.
Test and debug firmware using appropriate laboratory equipment.
Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes and development practices.
What You’ll Bring
Experience in embedded firmware development.
Strong programming skills in C.
Solid experience with bare-metal development and RTOS.
Experience with ARM Cortex microcontrollers is particularly valuable.
Experience developing firmware directly on microcontrollers/chips.
Good understanding of embedded hardware and the ability to work effectively with hardware engineers.
Basic understanding of wireless technologies such as BLE, LTE-M, NB-IoT and LoRaWAN. BLE experience is particularly relevant to our current products.
Knowledge of serial communication protocols including UART, I²C and SPI.
Familiarity with GNSS and satellite communications would be advantageous.
Experience with Git and other development tools is beneficial.
C++ experience would be an advantage.
Good written and spoken English.
What Makes This Role Interesting?
You'll be working on both new product development and sustaining engineering, giving you the opportunity to work across the full embedded firmware lifecycle.
The existing product portfolio uses Renesas technology, while our new products are moving to ARM Cortex-based MCUs. This means you'll have the opportunity to be involved in an important technology transition and help shape the firmware architecture of future products.
The role is highly collaborative, but remains very hands-on — you'll be writing, testing and debugging code yourself, rather than moving into a purely managerial or supervisory position.
Why Join SPX AtoN?
This is an opportunity to join a team developing embedded technology for new products, working at low level with modern microcontroller platforms and contributing directly to the products you’ll see move from development into the field.
If you're an experienced embedded firmware engineer who enjoys C, bare-metal, RTOS and hands-on development, we'd love to hear from you.
