We shape a sustainable future by making research breakthroughs in and across our disciplines, sparking the game changers of tomorrow and creating novel solutions to major global challenges. Our community is made up of 13 000 students, 400 professors and close to 4 500 other faculty and staff working on our dynamic campus in Espoo, Greater Helsinki, Finland. Diversity is part of who we are, and we actively work to ensure our community’s diversity and inclusiveness. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.
Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering is looking for a RESEARCH ENGINEER (robotics integration and electronics) Do you want to build and deploy real-world robotic systems – from platforms and sensors to computing and safety functions – and help turn cutting-edge research into working solutions both in the lab and in the field?
We are looking for a Research Engineer to take responsibility for the practical implementation of robotics integration and testing, agilely produce electronics solutions also for non-robotics test arrangements, and ensure that laboratories operate efficiently, safely and with proper documentation.
You will work as part of Aalto's Micro-electronics, Digital and Autonomous Systems, MIDAS research infrastructure and support researchers and students in their everyday experimental research.
This task is interesting because
your work has a direct impact on how smoothly the tests go and the quality of the test results.
In this role, you will be able to influence device selections, test protocols and integration practices together with researchers and security experts.
The technical environment is modern and versatile: you have access to a robot lab, mobile platforms, various sensors, embedded platforms, and support for the workshop and 3D printing.
The position offers an opportunity to increase your expertise in areas such as robot safety, electrical safety, electronics design, HIL/SIL testing, and laboratory infrastructure development.
The position does not require scientific publishing, but participation in publishing activities is possible within the framework of the work, if resources allow.
Your role
In this position, you will be responsible for the practical integration, deployment and safe testing of robotic systems. You will assemble robotic systems from components such as mobile platforms, sensors, computing platforms and safety functions, and ensure their interoperability.
You will configure the necessary software and hardware environments, especially ROS/ROS2-based entities, and perform basic diagnostics. You will develop and maintain test and measurement arrangements, such as HIL/SIL test benches, field tests, data collection and documentation.
In addition, you will support the design and prototyping of electronics and embedded solutions for the needs of both robotics and other experimental research environments. You will maintain shared laboratory equipment, prepare instructions and guide users. You will ensure practical safety together with Aalto's safety experts.
The position does not require the research development of algorithms or new methods, such as the development of SLAM or sensor fusion algorithms. Instead, you enable their reliable testing.
Your Experience
We do not expect perfect expertise in all areas. The most important thing is a strong practical approach to the integration of robotics, good problem-solving skills and a desire to develop as a versatile expert in the research infrastructure. You will succeed in this role if you are responsible, proactive and flexible in your approach to work. You enjoy working actively and constructively with academic and services staff as well as with external partners.
We are looking for
an applicable university degree, such as an engineer, M.Sc. (Tech.) or MSc and practical experience in the use and integration of robotics basic ROS/ROS2 expertise and the ability to assemble functional entities from different components hands-on expertise in electronics and embedded systems experience in laboratory environments, shared devices, commissioning, calibrations or documentation readiness to adopt and implement safety practices, such as robotic, electrical and laboratory safety good cooperation and interaction skills as well as a service attitude good English and at least satisfactory Finnish language skills Experience that would be an asset deeper ROS2 expertise, such as diagnostics, rosbag, TF or NAV2 sensor calibration and synchronization PCB design, EMC/ESD practices, and knowledge of IPC standards ECAD-MCAD cooperation, 3D printing or light metalworking experience in field robotics or UAV systems knowledge of ISO 13849 or ISO 10218 standards, S1/S2 qualifications, or willingness to acquire such certification experience in a Finnish research or industrial environment What We Offer We offer a br
