Jobbeskrivning

We are looking for a passionate technologist to lead the ways of working across all of Bittium groups software development: about 300 developers building everything from firmware to web frontends. You will set the standard for how we build, review, test, document and ship software, and roll it out hands-on with the teams. You get real authority, direct access to R&D leadership and backing from group management. You might be the person who - argued the team into a better merge strategy, and was right. - tried the new build tool the weekend it came out. - replaced a team's creaking toolchain with something modern, and nobody wanted to go back. - has been told no about a rewrite more than once. - moved into a lead, architect or managerial role years ago and never stopped writing code or tinkering with the pipelines. - has rolled a new way of working out across several teams, and knows the hard part was never the tooling. If a couple of these sound like you, keep reading. Whether you are a senior engineer ready to take your first step into leading and owning change beyond your own team, or a leader who has done this before and still wants to get your hands dirty, this role is built for you. What you will own - You define what modern software engineering means at Bittium: the standard every team builds against, and you keep raising it as the industry moves. - You set our group-wide engineering workflow: version control strategy, branching, code review and CI/CD, from commit to release, with room for what each product and team needs and built for agentic-first development. - You decide the quality bar a release has to clear: what we require from test automation, documentation and review before software ships. - You author an engineering handbook with our senior engineers: a practical guide to how we build software, clear enough that any team can pick it up and use it. - You help shape how we measure engineering health. Product teams choose the right technology for their product. You are the engineers' engineer: you define, and help build, the engineering infrastructure and ways of working they stand on: pipelines, quality gates, test and documentation tooling, ready to use and maintained like products. Adoption is supported, not dumped on the teams. The work does not end with the first rollout. The foundation keeps evolving, and you keep pushing it forward. Your first six months - Help write the first version of our engineering handbook: a practical guide to how we build software, in one place. - Set the group's ways of working, starting with source control and CI/CD, with the first teams already building on it. - Get the first shared pipeline, quality gates and documentation tooling live with real teams. Working, not a slide deck. - Put the first release quality gates into production use. Where we are headed Our goal is simple: well-tested, well-documented software, built on a shared, modern development platform. Software development is shifting toward agentic workflows, and we want our codebases ready for that: modular, containerized and verifiable, so an agent can check one out, build it, run the tests and trust the result. You define what that readiness means in practice, together with our Head of AI. We are also investing heavily in hardware-in-the-loop test automation against real devices, and your standards set the bar there too. What we ask - A software engineering background strong enough to hold your own with our senior engineers. - A track record of changing how teams work, whether as the engineer who pushed for better Git workflows and modern tooling and made it stick, or as the lead who ran that change across an organisation. - Strong opinions and dirty hands. You prototype, build and fix things yourself, and you lead the change at the same time: you own the direction, carry it through and answer for the outcome. - You know modern DevOps and the engineering platform behind it well: version control, CI/CD, test automation, developer documentation. - Agentic software development has clicked for you. You work with coding agents daily, you see where this goes as agents take on whole tasks with less and less supervision, and you have opinions about what that demands from codebases, tests, environments and documentation. - You can work across very different stacks. Ours include, among other things, C/C++, Python, TypeScript/Node.js, web frontends, embedded Linux and FPGA. - Fluent Finnish and good English. - Due to the nature of Bittiums business and our customers expectations, you are a Finnish citizen and able to pass security clearance conducted by the Finnish Security Intelligence Service (SUPO). We do not count years of experience. Skill, will and passion decide. What we offer - Group-wide authority over engineering standards. - Deep technology with real stakes, from military radios in national defence to ECG monitors in hospitals. - Room to stay hands-on.
